CFPJ International
Partnership with Nelson Mandela Metropole University in Port Elizabeth
In 2006, the CFPJ International (Journalism Training Center in Paris) began a partnership with the French and the Media departments of the NMMU (Nelson Mandela Metropole University in Port Elizabeth) , respectively run by Hilda Thomas and Bianca Wright (a part of the students attending courses in French are also students in Media studies).
This partnership has the support of the French Embassy and the Alliance Françaisein Port Elizabeth.
Both, the French Embassy and the Alliance Française, want to create to boost the courses in French.
The idea was to put together our competences and skills in order to suggest another way to learn and practice French, especially via journalism.
The first step of this partnership was the following: a student of the NMMU attended a training session at the CFPJ in Paris, for 2 months, covering the French presidential elections in 2007, with other French-speaking journalists coming from abroad.
The second step : several students of the NMMU covered the Highway Africa conference in September 2007, in Grahamstown, with a production of stories.
Veronique Garé, head of International department, was there and gave a course about writing skills in journalism to the students of the NMMU.
The third step : two South African students attented a training session in Paris about sources of information and ethics. With other French-speaking journalists coming from abroad.
And the next step of this partnership is to organise a multimedia session around the sports event Ironman in April 2009 in Port Elizabeth.
With the help of a bilingual French journalist and trainer, students (in French and Media studies) will create a blog with their productions of stories, photos, videos about Ironman.
English speaking and French speaking students of the NMMU will be involved in this project.
